In 2010, Jonathan Duhamel from Boucherville, Quebec, reignited poker interest in his home country when he won the World Series of Poker Main Event for a first prize of $8,944,310. In November 2012, the World Poker Tour (WPT), after a four year hiatus, staged a highly successful WPT Montreal event at the Playground Poker Club. The $3,300 (CAD) re-entry event attracted 1,173 starters and 25-year-old online heads-up specialist Jonathan Roy took home the first prize of $784,101 (CAD). The event was the third-largest WPT event in history and the largest poker tournament with a buy-in over $1,000 in Canadian history.

In the wake of Black Friday in April 2011, many online poker enthusiasts relocated north of the border to new homes in poker-friendly Canada. While the United States Department of Justice has settled its case against the biggest offenders, online poker remains possible only on the more liberal Canadian soil.

In support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the largest ladies poker event in Canada will take place at the Cascades Casino Hotel in Langley, British Columbia, in mid-February. The 8th Annual Women’s Poker Classic will consist of a $400 team event, a $300 bounty event, and a $450 main event. The total estimated prize pool for the series is over $250,000 (based on all the events being sold out.)

The teams for the team event will be comprised of two members of whom one member must be eligible to participate in the Women’s Poker Classic. Each team will receive one seat and the team members will alternate every level. Each member of the team starts with $2500; this amount can be combined to start the tournament or played separately as each member enters into the first round of play. The event is a freezeout format where teams will be moved to new tables as the tournament field narrows until a winner is declared.

In the bounty event, players will collect $150 bounties during the first 2 rounds of play. The tournament will be staged in the shootout format where each table will play down to the designated number of players who will advance to the next round.

There will be two starting days - January 18th and January 19th. Blinds go up every forty minutes and the event will run through January 20th. Last year the Playground Poker Club hosted a similar tournament which attracted 292 players.
